English Professor Dexter Cornell (Dennis Quaid) agrees to read student Nick Lang's (Robert Knepper) novel, and then Nick dies in a fall. Police suspect that Dexter is involved in Nick's death because Nick has been having an affair with Dexter's wife Gail (Jane Kaczmarek). Dexter goes on a drinking spree, is poisoned, and learns that he has only 24 hours left to live. He teams up with sweet student Sydney Fuller (Meg Ryan) who has a crush on him, and, together, they follow a twisted trail to the murderer.
