Spock's body must be transported back to the planet Vulcan, and Adm. Kirk (William Shatner) steals the Enterprise to retrieve Spock's coffin on the planet Geneses. Problems erupt when they encounter a Klingon ship, but Kirk wins the battle, retrieves the coffin, and heads for a ceremony on Vulcan to re-fuse Spock's body.

The reason for their journey to 1986 San Francisco is that humpback whales are now extinct, and they are needed to translate messages from an unidentified probe.
