After the Democratic presidential and vice presidential candidates are killed in a plane crash, the party chooses inept Washington D.C. Alderman Mays Gilliam (Chris Rock) as its replacement for their candidate for President of the United States. Now, Gilliam's ex-girlfriend Kim (Robin Givens) wants him back because she sees him as her chance to become the First Lady, and his romantic life becomes complicated because he loves Lisa Clark (Tamala Jones). Mays names his bail bondsman brother, Mitch (Bernie Mac), as his running mate, and, to the surprise of party bigwigs, the tide turns as Mays' street talk begins to win over the voters.
