Astronauts land on a newly discovered planet where apes rule, and humans are their servants. The space crew, led by George Taylor (Charlton Heston), trudges through a forest and finds a tribe that resembles Stone Age humans. Then, apes on horses appear clad in uniforms and start shooting, and the inarticulate, uncivilized humans scatter. The astronauts learn that the apes can walk upright and talk and are far more sophisticated that the humans. When the leader of the apes, Dr. Zaius (Maurice Evans), learns that Taylor can also talk, he orders him killed. Now, two apes–scientist Cornelius (Roddy McDowell) and Dr. Zira (Kim Hunter)–help Taylor escape and, in the process, Taylor uncovers the secret of the planet.
