Frank Bullitt (Steve McQueen) is a tough San Francisco cop whose assignment is to keep star witness John Ross (Pat Renella) safe for 48 hours until it is time for him to testify against the Mafia. But, hit men attack and kill Ross. Now, despite objections from Sen. This film adaptation of Leo Rosten's tragi-comedy bestseller is about Army neuropsychiatrist Dr. Newman (Gregory Peck) whose patients suffer breakdowns from battle fatigue. His job is to heal his patients and return them to active duty. But, he needs more help and gets it in the form of new arrivals–orderly Jackson Leibowitz (Tony Curtis) and nurse Lt. Francie Corum (Angie Dickinson). Jackson performs more than his fair share of pranks, but he aids Newman and Francie in dealing with the traumatized patients. Meanwhile, Newman and Francie are attracted to each other, and a romance blooms.

A San Francisco couple, Brad and Kate (Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon), have been together for three years, but marriage and visiting their families are not in their plans. This Christmas, they are at the airport ready to leave on vacation when fog rolls in, and all planes are grounded. What do they do? They visit their respective families at four different homes. First, there is Brad's grumpy father Howard (Robert Duvall), and then it's on to Kate's WASPish mother Marilyn's home. Next, Brad's mom Paula (Sissy Spacek), who is dating Brad's boyhood friend, is visited. Finally, they drop by Kate's father Creighton's (Jon Voight) place, which turns out to be the closest to "normal." When all is said and done, Kate and Brad's "Four Christmases" prove to be more than a little unusual.

This version of the 1956 movie takes place in San Francisco where more mysterious seeds from outer space are destroying the citizens. When the flowers from those seeds make a webbing while the victims sleep, they take over their human forms. Although they now look human, they are really emotionless creatures controlled by aliens that want to run the world. Biologist Elizabeth Driscoll (Brooke Adams) notices that her boyfriend Geoffrey (Art Hindle) doesn't appear normal and consults with psychiatrist Dr. Kibner (Leonard Nimoy) who tells her that she is imagining things. Finally Elizabeth, her co-worker Matthew Bennell (Donald Sutherland), and friends Jack and Nancy Bellicec (Jeff Goldblum and Veronica Cartwright) join forces and set out to uncover the facts about what is happening in their world.
