  Capt. Tom Reynolds (Frank Sinatra) leads British and American guerilla fighters against Japanese invaders in Burma during World War II. While on leave in Calcutta to bring the doctor, Capt. Grey Travis (Peter Lawford), and medical supplies back to his troops, Tom meets and romances Carla (Gina Lollobrigida) who is the mistress of local businessman Nikko Regas (Paul Henreid). Tom rejoins the troops and then finds that his reinforcements have been killed by Nationalist Chinese forces. Against orders, Reynolds leads his guerilla fighters into China and seeks retribution through bloodshed. A court martial follows, but Reynolds is able to make his point and is cleared. Meanwhile, Carla must decide whether or not to change her life and go to the U.S. with Reynolds.
