  When Martha (Monica Potter) flies out of Minneapolis on her way to a new life in London, over a short time period she meets three men–Frank (Rufus Sewell), Daniel (Tom Hollander), and Laurence (Joseph Fiennes). Although she encounters them on separate occasions, coincidentally, they are old friends, and each one falls madly in love with Martha.

  Fifteen-year-old Helena (Stephanie Leonidas) has an argument with her mother (Gina McKee) who then faints and is put in a hospital. Helena suffers guilt over the incident and slips into another world, known as the Dark Lands where she is mistaken for the missing daughter (also played by Leonidas) of the Queen (also played by McKee). As Helena tries to get back to reality, she thinks the Queen's daughter has replaced her at home. The answer lies in the magic talisman, which Helena finds to put everyone in their correct worlds.

But, director Michael Winterbottom attempts to tell the story through his alter ego, director Mark (Jeremy Northam), and uses two-thirds of the footage to reveal behind-the-scenes action of this "art" film.
