Bertram Pincus (Ricky Gervais) is a Manhattan dentist who undergoes a colonoscopy, something goes wrong, and he dies–but only for seven minutes. When he awakens, he can see and hear dead people, all of whom have unfinished business and want Bertram to do something for them. One of the dead, Frank Herlihy (Greg Kinnear), wants Bertram to intercede in his widow Gwen's (Tea Leoni) wedding to Richard (Billy Campbell) because Frank believes that Richard is only after her money. Bertram agrees, but once he sees Gwen, he falls for her himself and now wants nothing more than to win Gwen away from Richard. But, because of Bertram's lack of social skills, the task will not be easy.

On Larry's first night at the museum, he falls asleep and awakens to a museum filled with animated dinosaurs, dioramas, and wax figures that have come to life. Larry learns that this has been happening since the 1950s after the arrival of an Egyptian Tablet, and he now understands that his job is to make sure the museum is back in order by the time it opens each morning. Having left his job as night watchman at the Natural History Museum, Larry Daley (Ben Stiller) is now the CEO of a company making unusual inventions. He returns for a visit to the museum and learns than most of the exhibits are being shipped to the Smithsonian Museum for storage in order to make room for new displays. What Larry knows is that those exhibits come to life at night, and when he gets an S.O.S. call from cowboy Jed (Owen Wilson), Larry races to the Smithsonian. Once there, Larry learns that Egyptian pharaoh Kahmunrah (Hank Azaria) has come back to life and is seeking to dominate the world. And the battles rage as Teddy Roosevelt (Robin Williams), General Custer (Bill Hader), and Amelia Earhart (Amy Adams) fight the evil forces of Ivan the Terrible (Christopher Guest) and Napoleon (Alain Chabat). Great special effects.

Ian McKellen narrates this tale about Tristan Thorne (Charlie Cox) who lives with his father Dunstan (Nathaniel Parker) in the Victorian English town of Wall, which is separated from the enchanted town of Stormhold by a wall. In an effort to impress the beautiful Victoria (Sienna Miller), Tristan goes to Stormhold to recover a fallen star. The star has turned into a beautiful woman, Yvaine (Claire Danes), who is less than enthusiastic about being taken to Wall. Another problem enters the scene when the scheming sons of Stormhold's king (Peter O'Toole) also want the star, which their father tossed into the heavens on his deathbed. The star holds the key to the kingdom. That same star knocked Yvaine from the sky and now hangs around her neck. Then, to add to Tristan's trials, witches (Michelle Pfeiffer, Sarah Alexander, and Joanna Scanlan) want Yvaine's heart because it will bestow beauty and eternal life on anyone who cuts it out and eats it. The special effects, along with the characters, provide great viewing.
