A peace treaty between the United States government and the Apache Indians is threatened by the actions of Ed Bannon (Charlton Heston). When the Apache chief's college-educated son, Toriano (Jack Palance), leads the Apaches in bloody raids against the cavalry, the officers refuse to heed Bannon's warnings. Toriano and Bannon finally confront each other, and Bannon kills Toriano, which brings peace between the troopers and the Apaches.
