Odessa (Whoopi Goldberg) and her husband (Ving Rhames) have three children and she is a maid for the Thompsons (Sissy Spacek and Dwight Schultz), a well-to-do couple. Miriam Thompson becomes an activist for the cause while her husband goes the other direction. A good depiction of an important time in American history.

  While posing as hit men to look into a contract out on crime boss Losado (Jeroen Krabbe), Chicago cops Eddie Jillette (Richard Gere) and Joe Collins (Gary Basaraba) run into trouble and Collins is killed. Jillette's search for the assassin leads him to New Orleans where he searches for Michel Duval (Kim Basinger). She was the girlfriend of Paul Deveneux (Terry Kinney) who was also assassinated, and Jillette uses her to find Collins' murderer.

Nellie falls in love with French plantation owner Emile Beque (Rade Serbedzija) after first rejecting him because of his past. Meanwhile, Lt. Joseph Cable (Harry Connick Jr.) romances Liat (Natalie Jackson Mendoza), the daughter of Bloody Mary (Lori Tan Chinn), and they enter into a love affair amidst the Bali Ha'i tropical breezes.
