Luxury liner S.S. Claridon has been successfully sailing for 38 years until this voyage when an explosion in the boiler room threatens to sink the ship. At first, Captain Robert Adams (George Sanders) does not want his ship evacuated, but the situation worsens, and the passengers are told to abandon ship. However, not everyone is able to get to safety. In the midst of the impending tragedy, passenger Cliff Henderson (Robert Stack) struggles against all odds to save his wife Laurie (Dorothy Malone) who is trapped under the wreckage in their cabin.
