  American war correspondent Sally Tyler (Sharon Stone) is working in Beirut during the Cold War when she meets and marries British intelligence agent Leo Cauffield (Rupert Everett). Then, Leo disappears, and Sally searches for him. The clues lead to the Soviet Union where Sally goes to find Leo. It turns out that Leo is a dedicated Communist, and now Sally is torn between love for her husband and love for her country.

  In this odyssey, Tommy (Hugh Jackman) struggles to save his wife, Izzi (Rachel Weisz), who is dying from cancer. The film then cuts from the present 21st century to the 16th century in which Spanish conquistador Tomas (Hugh Jackman) is sent by Queen Isabel (Rachel Weisz) to find the fountain of youth. Then it cuts to the 26th century where Tom Creo (Hugh Jackman) is on a space ship accompanied by a dying tree of life. All three stories represent examples of the quest for immortality.

  While impersonating a woman, Song Liling (John Lone) is an opera singer who manages to have an 18-year love affair with French Embassy accountant Rene Gallimard (Jeremy Irons). When Gallimard is promoted to vice consul, Song spies on him for the Communists. Finally, Gallimard sees Song nude and flees from the relationship. Later, Gallimard is arrested and put on trial for treason, and the affair with Song is revealed while Gallimard maintains that he had no idea of the ruse.
