It turns out that Leo is a dedicated Communist, and now Sally is torn between love for her husband and love for her country.

Then it cuts to the 26th century where Tom Creo (Hugh Jackman) is on a space ship accompanied by a dying tree of life. All three stories represent examples of the quest for immortality.

Later, Gallimard is arrested and put on trial for treason, and the affair with Song is revealed while Gallimard maintains that he had no idea of the ruse.
