Strange occurrences begin, and it is soon evident that the expedition is in deep trouble when The Thing appears, and it becomes evident that The Thing can mutate into anyone that it kills. Based on Robert Stone's award-winning novel "Dog Soldiers," this story begins with Marine Corps combat veteran John Converse (Michael Moriarty) returning to Vietnam as a journalist and deciding to smuggle heroin into the United States. Merchant Marine sailor Ray Hicks (Nick Nolte) delivers the drugs to John's wife Marge (Tuesday Weld) in California, but then thugs–Smitty and Danskin (Ray Sharkey and Richard Mazur)–steal the drugs. It isn't long before Ray and Marge are on the lam–with crooked narcotics agent Antheil (Anthony Zerbe) close behind.
