British widow Anna (Irene Dunne) travels to Siam in 1862 to teach the royal children. While there, the King (Rex Harrison) and Anna develop a warm friendship through which she convinces the King to employ more humane treatment of his subjects. This film won Oscars for Best Cinematography and Art Direction and was the film debut for Harrison. The story was later remade as the musical "The King and I." Gale Sondergaard received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
