After being discharged from the Army for being a coward, Major "Lex" Kearney (Gary Cooper) develops a scheme in which he poses as a traitor to uncover espionage in Colorado involving the supply of needed horses for the Union during the Civil War. He joins Confederate soldiers and gains their confidence in order to discover the horse shipment routes and find the spy involved. The spy turns out to be Lt. Col. John Hudson (Paul Kelly). A battle ensues, Kearney is cleared, returns to duty, and later heads up the new U.S. Army Intelligence Department.
