A plane carrying an untested, top secret biological warfare virus crashes near a small town in Pennsylvania, infecting the city's water supply with the virus. Exposure results in instant death or irreversible insanity. While scientists frantically search for a cure, the Army is sent in–complete with biologically-safe suits–to round up the city's inhabitants and isolate them in the local school. Non-infected citizens attempt to escape from both the Army personnel and local authorities. A strong anti-government, anti-military statement.

This is the third film of Director Romero's zombie series. The first two, "Night of the Living Dead" and "Dawn of the Dead," were near-classics.
