Gerry dies suddenly, and Holly is left alone and miserable holed up in her apartment. Then comes Holly's 30th birthday, and her friends throw her a surprise birthday party, during which a cake with a mysterious message from Gerry arrives on the scene. Before he died, Gerry had written messages to Holly showing her the way to get back in life. Although Holly's mother (Kathy Bates) and her best friends (Lisa Kudrow and Gina Gershon) worry about the notes, those notes–signed "P.S. I love you."–are the very things that bring Holly out of her doldrums.
