A financially burdened couple, Nora and Arthur Lewis (Cameron Diaz and James Marsden), are given a box, and a mysterious stranger, Arlington Steward (Frank Langella), tells them that if they press certain buttons on the box within 24 hours, they will receive $1 million. But, if they choose to push the buttons, an unknown person will die in the process. Nora does push the buttons, a person across town drops dead, and they do receive the $1 million. They suffer guilt and find themselves in a moral dilemma. Arthur investigates the origins of the box, and the trail leads to NASA, the NSA, government conspiracies, and aliens.

In his ensuing search for God, Donnie becomes obsessed with time travel and what he perceives as energy reaching out from people's bodies. The story ends on Halloween when the world that Donnie knows does come to an end, and the puzzle pieces fit together neatly.

But, Boxer is kidnapped under mysterious circumstances and now, after gaining freedom, suffers amnesia, can not remember Madeline, and has teamed up with porn princess Krysta (Sarah Michelle Gellar). He is also involved with a Hermosa Beach police officer (Sean William Scott) whose identity has split in two–resulting in twins, Roland and Ronald Taverner. Taverner's efforts to find himself just might provide the key to a dangerous conspiracy.
