Two stories run through this film, which is set in the 1960s, and come together at the end. Stephen (Joseph Fiennes), recently out of prison, works in a diner and attempts to find a new life for himself. At night he works on a novel and writes letters. Mary's (Elisabeth Shue) husband and daughter died in an auto accident while she was pregnant with an illegitimate son, Leo (Davis Sweat), who is left to fare for himself. He began writing to Stephen while Stephen was in prison, and continues to correspond. Stephen eventually leaves the diner and begins a search for Leo who helped him get through his incarceration.
