Set in 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, when Dr. Martin Luther King led the boycott of the city's transportation system, the turmoil and racial conflicts are seen through the eyes of two families. Odessa Cotter (Whoopi Goldberg) and her husband Herbert (Ving Rhames) have three children and she is a maid for Miriam and Norman Thompson (Sissy Spacek and Dwight Schultz), a well-to-do couple. Miriam becomes an activist for the cause while Norman goes the other direction. A good depiction of an important time in American history.
