Set in 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, when Dr. Martin Luther King led the boycott of the city's transportation system, the turmoil and racial conflicts are seen through the eyes of two families. Odessa (Whoopi Goldberg) and her husband (Ving Rhames) have three children and she is a maid for the Thompsons (Sissy Spacek and Dwight Schultz), a well-to-do couple. Miriam Thompson becomes an activist for the cause while her husband goes the other direction. A good depiction of an important time in American history.
