  Los Angeles detective Mike Church (Kenneth Branagh) comes to the aid of amnesia victim Grace (Emma Thompson) who is suffering from nightmares about the murder of pianist Margaret Strauss (also played by Thompson). In an attempt to help Grace regain her identity, Mike takes her to hypnotist Franklyn Madson (Derek Jacobi) who runs an antique shop. While Grace is under hypnosis, surprises concerning both Mike and Grace that link them to the murder of Margaret 40 years ago are revealed.

Mentally challenged John Givings (Michael Shannon) appears to the only one to understand the Wheelers' problem. The film received three Academy Award nominations including Shannon for Best Supporting Actor.
