  Undercover narcotics agent Nick Tellis (Jason Patric)–suspended more than a year ago–is called back to the Detroit Police Department where he joins forces with Lt. Henry Oak (Ray Liotta) in solving the murder of a co-worker who died in the line of duty. Tellis and Oak work on the case, and Tellis goes over and over the known facts. But, unraveling the case proves so complicated that it threatens to destroy both Tellis and Oak.

  Based on the true life story of Ralph Waldo "Petey" Green Jr., this story really begins when ex-con Petey Green (Don Cheadle) lands a job as the morning host on the WOL-AM radio station in Washington, D.C., during the 1960s. Petey forms a friendship with program director Dewey Hughes (Chiwetel Ejiofor) who had offered him the job while visiting his own brother (Mike Epps) at Petey's prison. Dewey runs interference for Petey when dealing with station owner E.G. Sonderling (Martin Sheen) who is often dismayed by Petey's anti-establishment comments. But Petey plays a key role instilling hope in a generation of listeners as he addresses the Black community during the turbulence of the anti-Vietnam War and pro-Civil Rights era.

  When Cletis Tout (Christian Slater) is taken captive by movie-mad, hit man Critical Jim (Tim Allen), Trevor pleads a case of mistaken identity; he claims he is NOT Cletis Tout and, instead, is Trevor Finch. Cletis/Trevor then proceeds to entertain Jim with the story about a diamond heist by jewel thief Micah Donnelly (Richard Dreyfuss). Jim's interest peaks when he learns that Trevor and Micah escaped from prison together and are searching for the stash of diamonds.
