In this prequel to the Hannibal Lecter series, Hannibal's early years begin in a Lithuanian castle during World War II. Orphaned when their parents are killed in crossfire between Allied and Axis powers, eight-year-old Hannibal (Aaran Thomas) and his sister Mischa (Helena-Lia Tachovska) attempt an escape, but Mischa is killed, cooked, and eaten on their way to safety. Hannibal eventually finds refuge with his aunt (Gong Li) and, now, as a student in France, Hannibal (now played by Gaspard Ulliel) sets out to fulfill a promise made years ago to Mischa as he tracks down her Lithuanian killers. A trail of severed heads raise the suspicions of Inspector Popil (Dominic West) who, in turn, tries to stop Hannibal.
