The plan involves British Major General Robert Urquhart (Sean Connery) and American Brigadier General James Gavin (Ryan O'Neal) leading paratroopers on a mission to take over a road and five bridges through Holland to Germany. Meanwhile, Lt. Col. John Frost (Anthony Hopkins) will hold the critical bridge at Amhem so that British Gen. Brian Horrocks (Edward Fox) and Lt. Col. Joe Vandeleur (Michael Caine) will be able to lead troops across the bridge. However, plans go awry, and the mission turns into a disaster.

When Kris is framed for an assault and threatened with being placed in an insane asylum, a lawyer Bryan Bedford (Dylan McDermott) comes to his defense. Meanwhile, Dorey's young daughter Susan (Mara Wilson) has her own doubts about Santa, but Kris changes her mind, and she convinces the judge that he also should believe that legally, at least, Santa Claus is real. After winning the case, Bryan asks Dorey to marry him, and Susan gets her Christmas wish and something to believe in.

Then, Stedman comes across another patient–Catherine–who finally confesses that she killed her father to prevent being sent to an institution.
