When his factory job is eliminated, Al Fountain (John Turturro) faces a midlife crisis, which he solves by heading for Lake Splatchee–a place he remembers visiting as a boy. The lake is a disappointment, but Al meets his direct opposite: the Kid (Sam Rockwell). The Kid is a free-spirited, offbeat character living in a trailer home in the woods, and he teaches the sad and lonely Al that there is more to life than Al ever imagined.
