British spy Gus Bennett (Rex Harrison) is assigned the duty of retrieving Axel and Anna from the clutches of their captors. As he comes up with ways to solve the problem, Alfred sets each solution to a different classical number, and options change with the mood of the music. But, later, his efforts to physically carry out those plans result in slapstick gags, which end in a fiasco. This film was remade in 1984 starring Dudley Moore as the conductor and Nastassja Kinski as the "unfaithful" wife.

Later, in the 1930s, gangster Paolo Maltese (George C. Scott) buys the Rolls and tours Italy with hat-check girl Mae Jenkins (Shirley MacLaine). Like her predecessor, Mae also tries out the back seat–she finds "love" with a photographer (Alain Delon) while Paolo is in the U.S. on business. By World War II, socialite Gerda Millett (Ingrid Bergman) owns the car and fights the Nazis by smuggling Davich (Omar Sharif) across the border. In the process, this couple also finds pleasures in the back seat of the Rolls-Royce Phantom II.
