Landscape architect Will (Jude Law) has problems at home, which include fights with his wife (Robin Wright Penn) and more troubles with her teenage daughter Bea (Poppy Rogers). Now, Will and partner Sandy (Martin Freeman) have opened an office in the inner-city area of London's King's Cross. As soon as they move in, the office is burglarized, and then the crime is committed again. Will spends evenings at the office hoping to catch the culprit. Another strike occurs, and this time Will gives chase and sees a young man entering a seedy apartment building. Will learns that he is a 15-year-old Bosnian refugee, Miro (Rafi Gavron), and visits the apartment where he meets Miro's mother, Amira (Juliette Binoche), who ekes out a living as a seamstress. They form a friendship, but more problems follow.
