  Professional dance partners Bake Baker (Fred Astaire) and Sherry Martin (Ginger Rogers) are separated when Baker joins the Navy. Now, they meet in San Francisco and stage a show for charity during Baker's shore leave. Meanwhile, Baker's sailor pal Bilge Smith (Randolph Scott) romances Sherry's sister Connie (Harriet Hilliard), but all does not go well for them. Astaire and Rogers' dance rendition of "Let's Face the Music and Dance" is a highlight of the film.

All of them are searching for a cache of money, and, as murders ensue, Magee becomes involved in solving the mystery.
