The infamous French Guinea prison colony, Devil's Island, was an inhumane place on which to exist. One resident, Henri "Papillon" Charriere (Steve McQueen), claiming that he was falsely accused and convicted of murder, tries again and again to escape. After saving the life of fellow prisoner Louis Dega (Dustin Hoffman), Papillon receives help from Dega in his escape attempts. This film is based on the true story of his many escape attempts that finally culminate in his harrowing escape from Devil's Island.
