Based on an Erich Segal novel, this film revolves around English professor Bob Beckwith's (Martin Sheen) discovery that he is the father of newly orphaned Jean-Claude (Sebastian Dungan). Years before, Bob had an affair with Nicole (Nathalie Nell) in France, and unbeknownst to him she became pregnant and had a baby. Now, Nicole has died. Bob's wife Sheila (Blythe Danner) suggests that they bring Jean-Claude home for a visit, and that visit causes a variety of effects on Bob, Sheila, and their daughters Jessica and Paula (Arlene McIntyre and Missy Francis).

Oleg (Vladimir Mashkov), a Russian Mafia boss who is tired of his "work," moves to a mansion in Southern California. He takes a liking to his half-brother, Alex (Henry Thomas), and decides to turn his part of the business over to him. Meanwhile, his life without women changes when an exterminator (Jennifer Jason Leigh) arrives for a service call at his home. His life also takes a turn when he realizes that someone is out to get him.
