Now here's a goofy film about a goofy family in a goofy locale. Folks in Escanaba, Michigan, are proud to be Yoopers (residents of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan), and the Soady family represents the people who live for the deer-hunting season. But Rueben (Jeff Daniels), now in his forties, hasn't ever bagged one deer and is ridiculed by all. A new season dawns as the Soady men head to the cabin and their fun, with Rueben convinced he can change his luck. And the weird events unfold.

Set in the small Michigan town of Paradise, the friends of hard-drinking, gruff Jake (Vincent Angelini) think he needs a woman. So, they send off for a Russian mail-order bride, and beautiful Viktoria (Natalia Nazarova) arrives. She is disappointed in what she sees, and Reenie (Tantoo Cardinal), the only barmaid at the only bar in town, takes her in. The two bond, and Reenie gets a job for Viktoria at the bar while the two figure out how to raise money to send Viktoria home.
