  The husband of cabaret singer Chris Emery (Rita Hayworth) is murdered by a spy believed to be Max Fabian (Alexander Scourby). When Chris' brother-in-law Steve (Glenn Ford) arrives on the scene, he is not pleased that Chris is going along with a story that his brother committed suicide. What Steve does not know is that Chris is working secretly with the police in an effort to get more information on Fabian. Her investigation leads to a plot to set up a rocket launching site within range of the United States. When Fabian realizes what Chris is doing, her life is in danger, but, in the nick of time, Steve comes to her rescue.

  Bushrod Gentry (Robert Taylor) is a trapper in the 18th century, and Mary Cherne (Eleanor Parker) is determined to gain his love. He can't escape her persistent pursuit, and a shotgun wedding ensues. But, Bushrod takes off to the North Country, and Mary is not far behind. They continue to rescue each other in this funny film, but the treatment of the Native Americans in that era is not acceptable today. Good song: "The Higher Up the Berry Tree, the Sweeter Grow the Berries."

  Pima Indian Ira Hayes was one of the four men who raised the U.S. flag on Iwo Jima. This story begins when Hayes (Tony Curtis) leaves his Arizona reservation and joins the U.S. Marine Corps. He and Pvt. James B. Sorenson (James Franciscus) become friends in boot camp and go off to fight in World War II. Sorenson is also one of the four men who raised the flag on Iwo Jima, but he is later killed in battle. Hayes is not able to deal with the death of his friend and, at war's end, cannot adjust to the civilian world. He is found dead at age 32.
