Alek Neuman (Klaus Maria Brandauer) is a Russian who emigrates to Brooklyn's Brighton Beach. Neuman had been a boxer in Russia but was not allowed to fight in the Olympics because he is Jewish. Now, he finds work as a dishwasher and drinks heavily–until he meets amateur boxers Timmy Boyle (Adrian Pasdar) and Roland Jenkins (Wesley Snipes). He offers to coach them and trains them to fight in the Olympics where they could fight the Russian team that had rejected Neuman years ago.
