This TV remake of the Jules Styne/Stephen Sondheim Broadway musical is based on famous striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee (Cynthia Gibb) and involves her relationship with her domineering stage mother, Mama Rose (Bette Midler). Mama Rose has dreamed of stardom but having failed now concentrates on her daughters June (Jennifer Rae Beck) and Louise (Gibb) in her effort to turn them into vaudeville stars. Louise does succeed, but, instead of becoming a vaudeville star, she gains fame as burlesque stripper "Gypsy Rose Lee."
