  Based on true events between the years 1818-1820 that were documented by the State of Tennessee, this haunting story takes place in Red River, Tennessee, where young Betsy Bell (Rachel Hurd-Wood) is chased, slapped, dragged, and terrorized by a poltergeist–despite efforts by her desperate parents, John and Lucy (Donald Sutherland and Sissy Spacek), to rid their home of the evil spirit.

  Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw) has a unique ability of using his superb olfactory senses and apprentices himself to perfume maker Guiseppe Baldini (Dustin Hoffman) to learn how to capture those scents. After his lessons, Grenouille is able to create popular aromas, but his perfumes are made from the corpses of fresh-smelling virgins who he must kill in order to create scents that he hopes will be so sublime that they will erase the world's evils.
