This is not a pleasant story, but it is one that should hold the watcher's attention. The ending is classic.

Of course, this action initiates revenge from the I.R.A. rebel forces. John Ford won the Best Director Oscar, and Victor McLaglen took Best Actor honors. Two other Oscars were received (Best Writing and Musical Score), and the film was nominated for Best Picture.
