When James meets Sarah's mother (Piper Laurie) she tells him that Sarah was sexually molested as a teenager, and that contributes to her wariness of his attentions. Now, James understands and finds new ways to communicate with Sarah–which leads to the love affair that develops between them. Matlin won the Oscar for Best Actress, and nominations were also received for Best Actor (Hurt), Picture, Supporting Actress (Laurie), and Writing.

  Originally made for TV in 1983, the Emmy Award winning "Thornbirds" miniseries presented the saga of an Australian priest, Ralph de Bricassart (Richard Chamberlain). In the first episode, Bricassart falls in love with Meggie (Rachel Ward) who he first met years before. The episodes cover almost 30 years and include politics of the Church, Meggie's unhappy marriage, and then follows up with the lives of Meggie's children.

  I am a big fan of this man and of this movie.I think people never looked past his handsome body and really watched this the meaning he tried to project in this film.He will be missed by this little old lady.
