Captain Woermann (Jurgen Prochnow) and his company of German soldiers arrive at an ancient castle in Romania, and one of the soldiers accidentally releases a demon from within the castle's walls. Soldiers are killed, and Nazi Major Kampffler (Gabriel Byrne) steps in to deal with the matter. He consults Jewish Doctor Theodore Cuza (Ian McKellen) about translating cryptic writings in the castle. Cuza forms a pact with the demon that could bring an end to mankind–unless a mysterious stranger, Glaeken Trismegestus (Scott Glenn), can stop them.
