Steve Martin is back in his role as Inspector Clouseau. This time around, a master thief, "The Tornado," has stolen the Magna Carta, the pope's ring, and the Pink Panther diamond. Chief Inspector Dreyfus (John Cleese) assigns Clouseau to head up an international "dream team"–Vincenzo (Andy Garcia), Pepperidge (Alfred Molina), Kenji (Yuki Matsuzaki), and Sonia (Aishwarya Rai)–and they set out to solve the case. Clouseau's partner Ponton (Jean Reno) and Clouseau's love interest, Nicole (Emily Mortimer), are also along on the trip from Paris to Rome and help in the bumbling search for the stolen artfacts.

In this prequel to the original "Pink Panther" (1964), the bumbling Inspector Clousseau (Steve Martin) is working on a murder case in which a diamond ring has been stolen from a murdered soccer coach. That ring just happens to be the famous Pink Panther diamond, and Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Kevin Kline) promotes Clousseau to inspector in the quest to find the diamond. Dreyfus then places Gendarme Gilbert Ponton (Jean Reno) on the case with instructions to report back all actions taken by Clousseau–and the search is on.
