  On their drive through the New Zealand countryside to interview an author, Colin Iseman (William Zappa), literary critics Lane (Marcia Gay Harden) and Christina (Donogh Rees) are involved in a car crash that leaves Christina brain-damaged. Lane takes over the assignment, arrives at Colin's home, and becomes attracted to Colin's 15-year-old daughter, Angela (Caitlin Bossley). When Lane begins an affair with Colin, her relationship with Angela takes a turn for the worse, and Angela turns to the injured Christina for solace.

  Nine-year-old Flora (Anna Paquin) accompanies her mother Ada McGrath (Holly Hunter) to New Zealand. Ada, a mute, has found that she can express herself through her piano. Another man, George Baines (Harvey Keitel) comes to the rescue, and his actions also lead to complications. Holly Hunter won an Academy Award For Best Actress, and Anna Paquin won for Best Supporting Actress. Five other nominations were received, including Best Picture and Director.
