Also serving with Dan on the assignment are Tucker (Kevin Durand) who burned down Ben's barn, railroad boss Grayson Butterfield (Dallas Roberts), Pinkerton agent Byron McElroy (Peter Fonda), and Dan's teenage son William. As Dan and Ben match wits along the trek, they also encounter problems with Apaches and Ben's gang–led by Charlie Prince (Ben Foster)–on what turns out to be a dangerous journey to catch the 3:10 to Yuma. Florida beekeeper Ulee Jackson (Peter Fonda) is a widower whose son Jimmy (Tom Wood) is in prison, and Jimmy's wife Helen (Christine Dunford) has abandoned their children. Ulee is raising his teenage granddaughter Casey (Jessica Biel) and her 10-year-old sister Penny (Vanessa Zima). While visiting Jimmy in prison, Jimmy tells Ulee that Helen, who is living with drug dealers Ferris (Dewey Weber) and Eddie (Steven Flynn), is ill. Ulee brings drug-addicted Helen home and gets help from neighbor Connie (Patricia Richardson) to nurse Helen through her drug withdrawal. Ferris and Eddie arrive at Ulee's home and hold Helen and the girls hostage. They demand the $100,000 in stolen bank money that Jimmy hid in Ulee's bee yard. A fight ensues, but Ferris and Eddie are arrested. Now, Ulee struggles against the odds to fix the problems of his dysfunctional family, and there may be hope for their futures. Peter Fonda received an Oscar nomination (Best Actor).
