In the midst of a blizzard, four prisoners–Beck (John Leguizamo), Smiley (Ja Rule), Anna (Aisha Hinds), and crime lord Marion Bishop (Laurence Fishburne)–are delivered to Precinct 13 in Detroit on New Year's Eve. A SWAT team is concerned that Bishop will testify against their chief Marcus Duvall (Gabriel Byrne), and the team arrives at the isolated police station plotting to destroy Duvall. Landlines are cut, and cell-phone channels are cut off. Inside the station, in an effort to survive, Sergeant Jake Roenick (Ethan Hawke) and his staff–Jasper O'Shea (Brian Dennehy) and Iris Ferry (Drea de Matteo)–are forced into becoming allies with the prisoners to fight off the assault.

Former Desert Storm Special Forces soldier Patrick Sauvage (Jean-Claude Van Damme) is back home and hired by the sister (Vivica A. Fox) of retired World Heavyweight Champion Wayne Barclay (Razaaq Adoti) to serve as bodyguard for their family. His job is to protect them from a sadistic rap music mogul who Barclay helped put in jail, but he is now being released and is seeking revenge. Although Sauvage puts together a sharp team called "The Hard Corps," complications arise as Barclay and Sauvage butt heads on more than more occasion.
