During a trip to the California Desert, a Bavarian couple–Jasmin (Marianne Sagebrecht) and her husband (Hans Stadlbauer)–runs into problems, and Jasmin leaves her husband. After roaming across the desert, Jasmin ends up at the Bagdad Cafe where she is befriended by the manager, Brenda (CCH Pounder). Jasmin and Brenda become best friends and turn the decrepit Bagdad Cafe into a popular spot that features Jasmine as its star performer–and she catches the eye of artist Rudy Cox (Jack Palance) who wants to paint Jasmine's portrait.

She falls in love with the town's librarian, Roswitha (Rosel Zech), an East German immigrant who can't get over the loss of her husband when he was shot as they attempted to flee over the Berlin Wall.
