Set in England during the 18th century, this is the story of street urchin Kitty (Paulette Goddard) who steals artist Thomas Gainsborough's (Cecil Kellaway) shoes, and he then paints her picture. The picture rouses interest in his noble friends, and Kitty is taken under the wing of Sir Hugh Marcy (Ray Milland) and alcoholic Lady Susan Dowitt (Constance Collier) who plan to transform Kitty into a lady. Through marriage to the Duke of Malmunster (Reginald Owen), Kitty becomes a duchess, but, as she rises in the social world, it becomes obvious that class distinctions do not change basic personalities.
