Penelope Spheeris - Movies

The Beverly Hillbillies   1993     1 and a half stars    PG, 93 min.
Genre: Comedy
Director: Penelope Spheeris
Cast: Jim Varney, Dabney Coleman, Cloris Leachman, Lily Tomlin, Diedrich Bader, Buddy Ebsen, Erika Eleniak, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Dolly Parton, Lea Thompson

This movie is an updated version of the television show that aired during the 1960s. All the characters are back as is all of the corn. Nevertheless, for "Beverly Hillbillies" fans, this is another chance to see new actors in the tried and true roles of Jed, Granny, and their family and friends. Unfortunately, the script and execution are not as good as the series.

Great when you need something to really shake you up! Nothing since compares - it will stay with you forever and keep you thinking about how very fragile humanity is. Bonus: a young Maxwell Caulfield is a treat you won't want to miss.

The Decline of Western Civilization Part III   1998     3 stars    N/R, 86 min.
Genre: Documentary
Director: Penelope Spheeris

In this insightful "Decline of Western Civilization" entry, Penelope Spheeris focuses not on the music as much as on the "gutterpunks;" those dejected souls, the audience that makes up the Los Angeles punk rock scene.

The Little Rascals   1994     2 stars  User Rating      PG, 82 min.
Genre: Family
Director: Penelope Spheeris
Cast: Travis Tedford, Bug Hall, Brittany Ashton Holmes, Kevin Jamal Woods, Jordan Warkol, Zachary Mabry, Ross Elliott Bagley, Mel Brooks, Whoopi Goldberg, Daryl Hannah

This 1994 version of the early 1930s' "Our Gang" films is filled with many of the same trappings of its predecessors. For example, the actors exhibit uncanny resemblances to their earlier prototypes including Spanky, Alfalfa, and Buckwheat. This time around, Alfalfa (Bug Hall) falls in love with Darla (Brittany Ashton Holmes), and that threatens what the "He-Man Woman Haters Club" stands for. To save the day, the gang plots ways to keep Alfalfa and Darla apart.    1 User Review

Jared Martin plays a filmmaker who recruits Suzanne (Sondra Locke) to star in his version of Christ (as a woman). Richard Dreyfuss' role is small in this boring, insignificant film.
