Jane Fonda and Jon Voight won Academy Awards for Best Actress and Actor. An Oscar was also awarded for Best Screenplay, and five nominations were received, including Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor (Dern) and Actress (Penelope Milford as Sally's troubled friend Vi).
