Tom Craig (John Wayne) is a Boston pharmacist who comes to Sacramento to settle down during the California Gold Rush and is greeted with big problems from the Dawson brothers, Britt (Albert Dekker) and Joe (Dick Purcell), who run the town. After the Dawsons poison some of Tom's tonics, Whitey (Emmett Lynn) drinks it and dies. Tom is nearly lynched, but when word that Tom is helping gold miners stricken with typhoid fever reaches Britt, he rethinks his actions and confesses that he poisoned the drugs.

Hopalong Cassidy (William Boyd) receives a summons from Colonel Gonzalez and, along with Windy (George "Gabby" Hayes) and Lucky (Russell Hayden), heads to Mexico. The summons turns out to be a fake and is the work of Mexican criminal, "The Fox (Paul Sutton)," who has escaped from prison and wants revenge against Gonzales and Hoppy who had captured him. By the time Hoppy arrives, "The Fox" has killed Gonzalez. Hoppy does capture "The Fox" but is then outnumbered by gang members of "The Fox." With help from a band of caballeros, Hoppy is rescued, and all ends well.

They board a ship for the voyage, but they are not alone; those who want the amulet are hot on its trail.

During the 1890s, wild geese call, and lumberjack John Murdock (Henry Fonda) heads to Alaska in search of gold. All goes well–until John learns that Sally, who is now pregnant, once had an affair with John's old friend Blackie (Warren William). But, all is forgiven when Sally goes into labor, and Blackie braves the elements in a small boat and crosses raging waters with Sally's friend Clarabella (Ona Munson) who helps deliver the baby.
