  Based on John Fowles' novel, this is the story of English teacher Nicholas Urfe (Michael Caine) and his strange odyssey on a Greek isle. Nicholas accepts a professorship on the isle of Phravous and meets the mysterious Conchis (Anthony Quinn) and his lover Lily (Candice Bergen). Nicholas is attracted to Lily, but when his ex-girlfriend Anne (Anna Karina) comes to the isle to visit him, they begin their affair anew. After Anne flies home, Nicholas learns that she has committed suicide. Now, Nicholas is showing signs of bizarre behavior. He confronts Conchis, blames him for Anne's death, and the mystery deepens.

Lewis finds that a religious cult, the Stranglers, that performs crazed rituals, is responsible for capturing travelers and stealing their money as the cult wreaks havoc on the area around Bombay.
