  A killer ape and the murder of the circus owner interfere with Charlie Chan's (Warner Oland) trip to the circus with his 12 children. While Charlie is busy with his investigation, Number One Son Lee (Keye Luke) is attracted to contortionist Su Toy (Shia Jung) but gets no response to his advances. Meanwhile, Charlie travels by train with the circus to the next town trying to solve the crime before another murder is committed. J. Carrol Naish, who plays lion tamer Tom Holt in this film, will later take on the role of Charlie Chan in the 1950s' TV series.

  This is one of the best Westerns ever made. The film won one Academy Award (Best Cinematography) and was nominated for five others: Best Picture, two for Best Supporting Actor (Brandon de Wilde and Jack Palance), Best Director, and Best Writing.
