  In this sequel to the 1981 Emmy Award winning film "Bill," mentally challenged Bill (Mickey Rooney) is once again alone after his friend Barry (Dennis Quaid) moves to California. A social worker (Helen Hunt) takes over his case and teaches him to read. But, personal problems ensue, and Bill sets off in search of Barry and the friendship he once enjoyed.

  Abandoned by her mother, 16-year-old Miranda (Evan Rachel Wood) works double shifts at McDonalds in order to support herself. Miranda's father, Charlie (Michael Douglas), suddenly re-enters her life after spending two years in a mental hospital and involves her in his wild plan to uncover hidden gold in their California neighborhood. While institutionalized, Charlie read a diary written by a 17th century Spanish missionary who claimed that doubloons are hidden under what is now the neighborhood Costco. Together, father and daughter go in search of the cache, and, along the way, rekindle their relationship.

  Despite its plot, this is a surprisingly good comedy. The story takes place during the summer of 1963 when Carson (Phoebe Cates) is getting married. Her friends Melaina (Bridget Fonda), Pudge (Annabeth Gish), and Luanne (Page Hannah) take her for one last fling to Myrtle Beach where the four Southern high-school girls partake of the Summer Fun Festival.
